Cupramine copper readings: a test record you can actually check

Keep calculated additions, aquarium samples and reference checks in separate rows so a bare number does not become a dosing instruction.

Quick answer

A copper result needs a named test, unit, sample time and relevant treatment history. Keep a calculated bottle addition separate from a measured copper reading. This record helps check the evidence; it does not choose a target or tell you to redose.

Separate calculation from observation

Cupramine’s directions require testing before redosing. A note that says “added 1 mL” records an action, not the copper concentration observed afterward. Use different fields for the label calculation and the test result. Otherwise someone reopening a log may mistake an expected value for a measurement.

Identify what the test claims to measure

Seachem’s MultiTest Copper page distinguishes kits by the copper types they measure and describes a reference sample for checking performance. Check the instructions for the exact kit in use. A reference result belongs to the reference sample, not the aquarium. It does not establish a livestock-safe concentration.

Identify what the test claims to measure: worked table
EntryIllustrative noteWhat the note establishes
AdditionAmount, unit and actual timeAn action was recorded
Aquarium sampleTest model, result, unit, sampling timeA reported measurement
Reference sampleExpected value, observed value, procedureA method check under recorded conditions
Unclear colourBetween two chart stepsAn interval, not an invented exact value

Preserve disagreement

Suppose the keeper expects one value but reads between two chart colours. Record the observed interval and the expectation separately. Do not overwrite the result with the expected figure or average it with a different test method. Attach a photograph only as supporting context; lighting and display differences make it a poor substitute for the method details.

Make the support question reproducible

Include the bottle, test model, reagent details where available, water type, recent additions, sample time, reference procedure and observed result. Ask whether the method is appropriate and what could explain the mismatch. The treatment log can retain those details, but it does not verify measurements or interpret a result clinically.

Use your own details

Download the editable text file, fill it in on your device and keep it with the relevant record. This blank worksheet records your information; it does not verify entries or approve treatment.

  1. Bottle and copper test identity
  2. Sample time and recent recorded additions
  3. Aquarium result, unit and reading uncertainty
  4. Reference procedure, expected and observed result
  5. Question about method or discrepancy

Put it into practice

Your checklist

  • Separate additions, aquarium results and reference checks.
  • Keep the test model, units and sample time with each value.
  • Record an ambiguous reading honestly before asking for method guidance.

This article distinguishes manufacturer statements from FishyMag’s own workflows and arithmetic examples. Linked formulation records retain their own evidence dates; publishing this article does not refresh those records.

These links provide context, not product recommendations.

FishyMag reports what manufacturers say, quoted and linked. It does not diagnose illness or recommend a treatment, and it never infers that a product is safe from the absence of a warning — where no statement exists, it says so.

Formulations change. Always read the label on the bottle in your hand, and contact the manufacturer if your tank contains anything valuable or unusual.
